Cookies

This page describes the cookies and similar technologies used on builtbywomen.org. It complements our Privacy Policy, which covers personal data more broadly.
Short Version
We do not use any tracking, advertising or behavioural cookies. We do not fingerprint your browser. The site sets no first-party cookies of its own, and we have therefore not implemented a consent banner. If we ever introduce a non-essential cookie or similar technology, we will request your consent through a banner before doing so.
What Is a Cookie?
A cookie is a small text file a website asks your browser to store. Other
“similar technologies” include localStorage, sessionStorage, browser
fingerprinting and tracking pixels. Under the EU ePrivacy Directive,
non-essential cookies and similar technologies generally require your prior
consent.
What This Site Sets
| Technology | Set by | Purpose | Required for the site? |
|---|---|---|---|
| none currently | Built By Women | We do not set any first-party cookies, localStorage, sessionStorage or fingerprinting at this time. | n/a |
Cloudflare security cookies (e.g. __cf_bm) | Cloudflare (our hosting provider) | Set transiently by Cloudflare to distinguish humans from bots and to mitigate denial-of-service attacks. Strictly necessary for the site to operate securely. | Yes — strictly necessary |
We treat Cloudflare’s strictly-necessary security cookies as exempt from consent under the ePrivacy Directive (Article 5(3)) and POPIA, because they are essential for delivering the service you have requested.
Analytics: Plausible
We use Plausible Analytics to understand, in aggregate, which pages people read. Plausible is hosted in the European Union (Germany) and is designed to respect privacy:
- It does not set cookies.
- It does not use
localStorageorsessionStoragefor tracking. - It does not track you across other websites.
- It does not collect personal data — only aggregate counts of page views, countries, devices, and referrers.
Because Plausible meets the bar that EU regulators have set for “consent-exempt analytics” (no PII, no cross-site tracking, no cookies), we load it without a banner. You can read more on plausible.io/data-policy.
If you would still prefer not to be counted, your browser’s “Do Not Track” signal or any reputable ad-blocker will prevent the Plausible script from running.
Third-Party Embeds and Links
We do not embed third-party widgets (no YouTube, no Twitter timelines, no maps, no fonts from Google). External resources (such as Discord and our contributor form on Google Forms) open in a new tab and only set cookies after you visit them. Their cookie behaviour is governed by their own policies.
Changes
If we ever introduce a non-essential cookie, tracking pixel or similar technology, we will:
- Update this page with details.
- Show a clear consent banner before the technology is set.
- Default any optional categories to off until you actively accept.
