Built By Women is a community for women breaking into tech — and the women-owned businesses we build for. We pair real work with senior mentorship, so members leave with experience that counts and businesses leave with something they're proud of.

How it began

Built By Women started as a frustration. Most tech jobs ask for experience that women — especially career-changers and self-taught beginners — have never been given a chance to earn. The catch-22 is loud: you can't get experience without a job, and you can't get the job without experience.

It was meant to launch in 2022, but the founder ran out of bandwidth. The idea sat for three and a half years. In 2026 we picked it up again, this time with a community server, a brief, and the first women-owned businesses lined up to build for.

We're still small. That's on purpose — the first cohort is meant to feel close, not anonymous. As the bench grows, so does the work we can take on.

Mission & vision

Our mission is simple: more women in tech, with the experience and the network to actually get hired. We do that by routing real client work — websites, brands, apps — through people who are still learning, with seniors mentoring as they go.

The longer arc is a visible community of women shipping public, attributable work, and a steady pipeline of women-owned businesses that benefit because of it. Every project we ship is proof for the next person who walks in.

How we work

Members commit roughly six hours a week. We're based in South Africa (SAST, UTC+2), but we'll do our best to accommodate women joining from anywhere in the world. True beginners are welcome — there is no portfolio test at the door. Mentorship comes from senior engineers who are still on the tools.

For businesses, work is free if you're women-owned or women-led. Pay-what-you-can otherwise. Sponsor funds pay for hosting, paid professional support and the day-to-day cost of running the community.

And we believe in receipts. Every project we ship is named, credited and added to a member's portfolio. No invisible work.
